Compass Math is an Integrated Learning System (ILS). Students participate by completing activities in two separate components of the program that should happen concurrently. They work back and forth between 2 different sets of activities - those in the Learning Path that were prescribed by the assessment and those that are prescribed by the teacher, and created to match needs in the math scope and sequence.
The Learning Path, driven by individual results on the Pre-Test, is designed to focus student activities on the specific standards or areas of weakness. The standards span the entire year’s learning. The Learning Path will consume approximately one-third of the students’ computer time.
The Teacher Prescribed Path, driven by our Curricular Scope and Sequence, consists of student activities chosen by the teacher to align with classroom needs. Teachers must choose Class Assignments tailored to each student based on individual work progress. The Teacher Path will consume the remaining two-thirds of the students’ computer time.
Students should work on computer activities 45 minutes a week. Don’t become so focused on the amount of minutes that you negate the quality of the experience. Think more about the number of activities per day. If a student does 1 completed activity per day with a minimum score of 80% and logs out, he will easily get in his required time per week.

New Learning Activities in Compass for Math New 8-22-11
In addition to the many changes in the teacher login screen, CompassLearning Math contains many new activities available for grades K-4. The PDF below contains a list along with the activity numbers. Since these activities are brand new, they are not currently available in either the district-wide assignment bank or the learning paths. The activity numbers differ from the old because they denote the Common Core group for each activity.
OA = Operations & Algebraic Thinking; CC = Counting & Cardinality; NBT = Number & Operations in Base Ten; G = Geometry

For early elementary students, there is a word document below with screenshots of the login section. This is more effective because it looks exactly like the login screen. It minimizes difficulty students experience transferring username and password from a card to the screen.
CompassLearning only gives scores and credit for time for completed work. To complete the activities correctly, students must use the EXIT buttons in the program.

Teacher Tools
These tools are not activities for the students to use independently during center time, but are rather supportive tools that coordinate with those activities to teach the content as virtual manipulatives and interactive presentations.
Math Toolkit - Virtual Manipulatives
There are math toolkits available in both the students' and teachers' login screens. Each is viewed slightly differently, but contains exactly the same virtual manipulatives. The students can view their own math toolkit by clicking the icon on the left of their launch screen with a picture of a screwdriver and wrench and then the MATH button in the window that opens. The teachers can view their math toolkit by clicking on CONTENT and RESOURCES, then looking in the center section of the window for the words "Math Toolkit". The student's math toolkit has pictures that identify each different manipulative. The teacher's math toolkit lists the manipulatives by name. Every tool in the math toolkit, except Algebra Tiles, has a tutorial and can be printed.
The following virtual manipulatives are available in the Math Toolkits.
Algebra Tiles
Base Ten Blocks
Calculator
Coordinate Graphing Tool
Counters
Data Representation Tool
Fraction Tool
Geoboard Tool
Number Line Tool
Probability Tool
Solid Shaper Tool
Transformation Tool
With many classrooms in our district using the model classroom equipment, it would be very easy to use the Math Toolkit manipulatives to lead the students while they use real manipulatives. They would be great for modeling how to use them so students can use them while they work their activities during their math center time.
